Is life a straight path?
I thought I would share a message I received. It is from one of the WordPress gurus, Judi Knight, that I follow as a resource. The message is clear for any person, though.
Hi There Fred Prasuhn,
As a psychologist, I’ve always been interested in how people end up with the life that they have. I love to look at the twists, turns, things that happened and the decisions that were made that took them to where they are today.
A few years ago, I did a keynote speech at WordCamp Asheville and I started it off with the music from the Talking Heads, Once in a Lifetime.
“And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?”
Remember that song?
It seems that not many people start out and maintain a linear career path, especially in the web design field.
I certainly didn’t set out to be a web designer. You probably already figured out that where I am today wasn’t at all predictable.
After selling a software company I started with my ex-husband, I found myself dishing out marketing and business advice to my friends in our local coffee shop and since I had a couple of WordPress sites, I’d be singing the praises of this new web technology and people wanted to pay me to work with them.
And a few short years later, me- a nobody was organizing a WordCamp and had MattMullenweg’s American Express Card in my pocket for the weekend. And I asked myself, “How did I get Here?”
